Wrong clocktime whenever start up

I have an old desktop Dell Dimension 4600, by now almost 8 years.

Recently, I found, whenever I start it up, the clock time ( date and time is always July 2003). I checked about it and do not think it is related to virus. Also, whenever after I synchronize it, if I restart it some time later, the same issue happens again.

I suspect some components, maybe, related to power supply or battery charge might be defective?

Can anybody help me with it?

Thanks

There is a battery in there which remembers settings as time and other things - this battery is dead - change it and you´re pc is fine again.

It is called the CMOS battery. Really obvious big silver button battery you cannot miss.

Here it is a picture of the dell dimension 4600 motherboard

The round object on the middle of the right edge is the CMOS battery.

Remember to switch off power supply, unplug power cable and hold the power button for 10 seconds to drain residual electricity and ground yourself before working.

Open up the case and u'll see a white circular shaped thing (name is CMOS battery) near the CPU fan (residing inside a blackish circular hatch on the motherboard).
Thats the battery which is probably dead (tho try taking it out and reinserting it to make sure its really dead...sometimes it works)

Simply take that battery out and go to your local Radio Shack store, or any other electronics store nearby and buy a replacement battery.
