Avoiding Proprietary

I'm in the midst of helping a family member acquire a new computer. He isn't interested in building his own system but also wants to avoid getting stuck with proprietary parts again . Currently, what manufacturers do and do not use proprietary parts in their systems?

You can go to the following site which allows you to choose your components. The components are not proprietary since they are also sold individually (by other websites) to people who build / upgrade their own computer.

I don't know how good or reliable they are since I build my own PCs.
