looking to update my graphics card and i cant decide which to get... any thoughts would be much appreciated.

which is better for gaming... asus gtx 570 direct cu II or hd radeon 6970 gigabyte 2g overclocked

price is not an issue as they both cost the same for me.

Depends. The GTX570 ASUS II overclocks better, but the HD6970 2G has more RAM, is already overclocked, and is better for 1920x1080 and above.

If you're a decent overclocker, you might push the 570 pass the 6970. Otherwise, ATI's card is better at out-of-the-box settings.

If you may add a second card for crossfire/SLI or are using(or going to use at some point) a resolution higher than 1080p I would go with the HD6970 because those situations can really benefit from the extra memory. Otherwise the GTX 570 is in general very slightly faster.
If you would like to save some money the HD6950 2gb can be unlocked into an HD6970 with a BIOS flash;

well the both of them are perfect cards but the 6970 is better than gtx 570 for the coming games the 6970 will handle heavy DX11 games because of the extra ram and because of its advanced tessetlation but nvidia cards are very good becuase of its exclusive technologies
physx,nvidia 3d vision
and nvidia cards will be good for all games specially the ones that have been designed for fermi chipset like metro 2033
good luck

Why do you keep giving that stupid advice of flashing a 6950 into a 6970.That happened when the first lot of 6950 came out.Now getting a card which will successfully flash into 6970 is very rare.It will not happen in any NON-reference model. So stop giving that stupid advice. :pfff:

AS for the question who is better i would say 6970 is better than 570 in performance.

There are still plenty of reference models available and they still work so there is nothing "very rare" about it. There are also plenty of reports of people flashing non-reference cards so some do work though almost all have removed the dual BIOS switch.
I'm sorry if you consider it "stupid" to give advice that can save people about $100 dollars but I consider that judgement "stupid" so... yeah, backatcha.

I know this is really really old, but one has to understand when searching in Google these types of threads come up...so I have to post.

i dont think anyone at this point (midway through June 2011) is going to get that much of a benefit flashing a 6950 because 1. you need 2 gig 6950 and 2. the price point has gone up for the 2 gig versions (reference or non-reference) to about 300 bucks. I can get a 6970 from xfx with a 50 dollar rebate for about 330. The difference is minimal for many gamers that they might as well go with the 6970.

Cheers

:)

WTF.........................I bought my 6950 1GB at almost USD 270

Either, I dont think it's worth unlocking a HD6950 2GB into a crippled 6970,

1. reference models are nearly depleted
2. a small OC is better, (eg. Gigabyte HD6950 1GB OC at 870mhz core )
3. IMO, HD6950 2GB is a better buy than a HD 6970 2GB from a performance/buck standpoint.
4.Do u plan to Crossfire or SLI ?

not sure by what price platform you are referring to. the 6970 is about 330. the 2g 6950 is about 300 from reputable dealers...

You can unlock 1GB and 2GB cards, reference or not. You just can't flash a 6970 bios on it, but that's not the only way to unlock the shaders, and MSI Afterburner can be used to OC it past 6970 clocks.

However, there seems to be reports of people with bios that cannot be flashed, which means that some companies are sending cards out with read only bios.

the thread is for the better card not 6950 and flashing it if you didnt go with new card i will go with 6970 i alreadt have gtx 580 in my system but im using it for 1920-1080 monitor nvidia should be good at that but now i now regret because i may buy a new monitor 2560-1440 that monitor could take good advantage of the new ati cards
