Why are Z77 Motherboards so popular?

Title says it all. Why does everyone get these?

Only if you are getting a new board; the z68 is just as good in many respects, but may require a bios flash to run the new ivy bridge cpus. And the price is about the same as the z68.

Do people seriously buy motherboards thinking "meh, USB 3.0 isn't really a mature technology, I don't need it" and then a couple of years later, wish they'd spent like $10 extra for a better motherboard?

Or do all the people who think like this just replace their entire system every few months?

Some of those folks may be compulsive buyers like I used to be; you can pick up some bargains once some of those items are put up for sale. I'm not afraid to buy used stuff, as long as I get it for one third to half off.
