I just purchased a new desk top computer. when my kids try to use the headset mic for rosetta stone, they can hear it talking, but the computer can't hear them. I have tried to set up speach recognition, but this did not help. Do I need a driver for the microphone to work? The microphone still works on the old computer.

If it's a regular Jack microphone, then you don't need a driver. Only some USB microphones need drivers and Windows should recognize and install them by itself. It must be a fault in your audio settings.

ChrisCornell is right

USB Headphones require a driver.

For the normal headphone jack mic. you just need your sound drivers installed & working.

I found this out the hard way, if you have a mic in your webcam disable it. My friends while gaming can't hear me talking if the mic in my cam is enabled. It's easy to do in win7. Not sure how to do it in XP.
