Hello everyone,

Im starting a (70 pc) based gaming cafe , was just wondering whats my best option for a server.

Case: haf42
MOBO: x58ud3r gigabyte ( for extra sata's)
Procesor i7 3.2
Ram 4x3 GB at 1600 ( need help here , should i go for more? or 2000? or -.-)
Hdisks 6x2terra WD Bcaviar
Main Hdisk 1x 10krpm raptor 150gb for the net cafe program + 2008 server( do i really need 2008 or 2003 is enuf?) (also is 10k rpm stable?)
any gfx card
1500 watt or 1200 power supply

the server will have lots of movies and tv shows etc.. hence why i need the storage, is this a fair option , or are there specific new servers out there which i should be using ( at my early stages was going for a Dell server, that costed like 15k$ which is too much...)

would be really helpfull if i can get some information

thanks all

regards,!

Seems nice. I'd consider a SSD over the 10kRPM Raptor to conserve power and improve reliability. You don't need that big a PSU. Get a normal 400W one.

There are a lot of possibilities for a gaming server, here are a few questions worth examining

What is your server going to do by % workload? (e.g. 50% gaming, 30% movies, 20% back-ups)

Are you running a windows or linux server? If windows, what server options are you looking at? (e.g. exchange for mail, virtual machines for thin clients)

Finally, what are the 70 pc's running? If you have a powerful end-client, then your needs on the server end are reduced, and vice-versa.

It will depend all on what the server must do? Use server 2008 enterprise 32bit. and important get a Mobo with at least 4 lan port (1gb/s). whats the use you can copy 300mps on the server but on the network it will only copy 20mps.

the setups sounds good. if you run dedicated server the i7 will be just fine, but rather get more memory. use 16gb of ram 1333 or 1600. 70 users logged on aint much. it will use max 2gb and not really processing. its actually a overkill. but go for it if you can. but really the most important thing for the server is : user must have HIGH SPEED accses to the server. so run a main 16 port 1gb/s with 4 to the server and the other 5 linked to each hub (16port) also 1gb/s.. .. (15*5 = 75) thats about . with CAT6E cable.

regards!
