Well I went out an bought an external USR 56k Modem 5686-04(serial not USB) and for some strange reason I can not get above 28000bps and it take me several tries to connect to my ISP.

Now my old modem was an internal USR 56k modem 5687-02(ISA) and always connect at 48000bps or higher on the same line.

What is the problem cause I am open for suggestions and don't say get cable or DSL cause it is still not avaible in my area.

Thanx in advance.

Yeah, a friend of mine can't get cable or DSL either. It sucks.

But as for your problem, let me just say that external modems aren't as good as internal. I don't know if that's what your problem is exactly, but it isn't helping. Sorry.

I have an external USR 56K Modem with a similar result.

On the comp with the USR I get 40,000bps (the phoneline's crap btw)

with the one I'm typing on with an internal modem - 41,333bps other 42,667bps

I've seen other make externals which connect higher than my USR....

One good thing is reliability though and that the modem doesn't slow down the comp on connection and disconnection like internal modems.
