Hello,
my friends screen is now only showing the bottom half of the screen the top half is blank with lines running up and down what has happened and can it be fixed will this be costly

Sounds like the video card died. A simple way to check is to install it in another working computer.

The best thing to do is see if changing the screen helps. If the second screen works then it is most likely the screen itself. If both screens act up it is most likely the Video Card. Cost will depend on the make and the model of the failed component. It is possible to have screens repaired but often the cost makes buying a new screen or a good second screen more economical in the long run.

Agreed, try a different monitor, if it still does it then its your graphics card. Prices can vary depending on the specification of the video card but if its not a high end one then can be replaced on the cheap
