Problems after flashing bios

Hello,
I was wondering what is the purpose of the BIOS flashing, in what cases we can do it and how, thank you in advance.

Sometimes a bios is outdated and needs a update to support a new cpu that just came out, that's one reason.

I've built all my own pc's since 1997 (and friends and family) and NEVER updated a bios because it was never needed.

Now my current mobo (h61) does need a bios update for new Ivy Bridge cpu's, which I will do at some point when I upgrade.
