I'm not sure if my cpu is stable.

I have a quick question. I bought a x3 740 from newegg and unlocked it on my very first built. I know that locked core was defective which is why it was turned off by amd. I heard unlocking cores could make the cpu unstable. How can I tell if its stable or not. I have had no problems with it so far.

Solution

Run prime95 for 24hrs... Also use HW monitor and save the datalog to a file on the computer. You can profile the temp w/ time.

There should be no failure ... ZERO, NADA
what motherboard do you have?
there should be an option in bios to 'unlock' locked cores, if you have four usable cores it will register in task manager etc as four cores, then run prime95 or a similar cpu stress test program to find out, although I would google 'unlocking x3 740' to read up on other peoples experiences and to pick up tips :)
I've unlocked two X3 435's and they're both fine, but the next one off the line may actually have that defective fourth core, its always a gamble i'm afraid but good luck :)

My motherboard is a MSI 770-G45 amd am3 motherboard. It has the ability of unlocking cores which I already unlocked, but don't know if it's stable. The name comes up as x4 40 which ranks near a x4 955.

How do I speed up my 9600 gso 512mb's fan? HW monitor says it's running at 123 F and only at 50% speed. I'd like to increase the speed of the fan to decrease temp. to at least 100 F so my case can stay cooler, but don't know how. Also my motherboard is hitting 134 F which means I need to replace my case's terrible fans since they are running barely steadily at 700rpm and blowing about 20 air flow... Good news, my cpu is at 49F 24/7 since both 80mm fans push about 34-40 on air flow. I still haven't done the test yet. Just about to though.

Prime95 was still running after 24hours and everything was still at the same temp. Thanks a lot for clearing things up for me :D

Also it say on cpu that it's 127.20 watts, does that include the motherboard and the fan on my cpu?
CPU running at 11C, HDD running at 40C, 9600gso 512mb running at 55C with 50% fan speed, 9600gso 512mb running at 52C-53C with 80% fan speed, and mobo is running at 52C on TEMP1 and running at 39C at TEMP2. I'm going to change the location of one of my fans to push in air faster and also another fan will be flipped to push in air as well.
I'm upgrading my 9600gso to a HD 5770 today, then wait for the new 7xxx series to come out and plan to either upgrade to a 7xxx series or a HD 6950, or a HD 5870 depending on value after the HD 7870 or HD 5770 comes out.

Actually it's 11C-12C I have 2 fans on the cpu fan both have 36 airflow. Since I just installed a hd 5770, I moved the 140mm fan to the side of my case and aimed it at the middle of my motherboard pushing air in. The fan is pushing around 78 on airflow. That helps keeps both the cpu, motherboard, and even the graphics card cool. The extra fan might even push it down to 9C or 10C. I might buy another one. It's only $7 at Fry's so it's worth it.

Normal room temp is 22C so unless you are running your box in a fridge nothing in it is at 10C; 30 to 35C is a good idle temp, but as long as your load temps are OK and you see no BSODs don't worry about it.
