Old proc new card

Hi Toms,

I need some advice.

I had planned to pick up a new rig but the plan bombed as I had to shift house. I do have enough money for a new GPU and PSU though. I have the following system. Be warned. Its a relic.

Proc : AMD Athlon 5600X2 ( 2.9 GHz)
Mo-Bo : Asus M2-Vm ( single PCIE 1.0)
Ram : 4GB DDR2 Transcend at 800MHz
PSU : On board
GPU : XFX 8600gt (512 MB)
Present Display : 1440 x 900 (samsung 943 NWX)
New Display : 1920x1080 (samsung 32C530)

I plan to upgrade to a Bulldozer based system when it comes up but am struggling to play any games with my existing rig. I need to pick up a good GPU and am looking at the following options. I plan to crossfire/sli when the Bulldozer comes up. The options are:

1. 460 GTX
2. 560Ti
3. 6870

I am not even vaguely interested in lower cards or upper cards as there will either be bottle necked or too weak in performance. How do you guys expect performance to be compared to my present GPU?

I am also throwing in a Corsair 1000 TX.

Do let me know.

Ok. But look at my Proc. How will it actually perform at high resolutions??? Will it work with my Mo-Bo??? Any practical experiences????

It may struggle a bit but just turn up all the detail settings if that's the case, I'm running a pair of 560's on a 3.0ghz CPU and it was only when the second one was installed that the CPU started to struggle a bit.

Iif your going to be putting it in your new system, and that's gonna be soon, then go for a 560ti or 6950 1gb. both are in the $210 range AR.

But the cpu is going to be a bottleneck until you upgrade.

At the moment the cards are in a 680i motherboard with an E8400 CPU but they will eventually live in an Asus P8P67 Pro with an i7 2600K.

Ok...dude I did not expect that......2 560's Ti in SLI is sweet. I am a bit shocked in reality. But your processor is 20% better than mine. Wonder how much of a hit I will take....hmmmm

That's why I said "it may struggle a bit" but as you turn both the resolution and the details up it will take the workload off the CPU, SLi adds to the CPU's workload.
