I have a gateway 9150 and am having trouble. Started over weekend, was
running fine, then started crashing. By this I mean when turned off then
back on would say no operating system found. Leave off awhile then would
boot to windows screen and go no further, wouldn't boot all way into
windows. (98) Thought was hard drive, so installed another. Will install
windows, load everything, but will do same thing. Wiped hard drive clean,
did fresh install, and seemed like it was going to be ok. Was installing
network card, got it installed, trying to get connected, and got a blue
screen. Nothing on screen, just froze. Have retrieved a bios update from
gateway, not installed yet. Does this sound like bios or motherboard
problem. If bios, are there any settings I can change. Will the update help.
System was made in 1999, as far as I know, no update has been done. Any help
appreciated.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but this sounds like a faulty motherboard. I'd have it looked at. I suspect, though, that unless you are able to replace the m/b yourself, that the cost of repair will be as much if not more than the cost of a new notebook.

A motherboard problem would be my guess, too. But it could also be a
CPU cooling problem (if the problem is worst when the laptop is
hotter). Even a memory problem is not out of the realm of
possibility. Windows 98 is easily corrupted in my experience; a
flakey memory system could cause that.
What I would do is grab the Ultimate Boot CD from here:
That's assuming you have a CD burner. Grab the .iso file from here
and burn a CD, then boot that CD on your laptop. This should let you
run some diagnostics on the memory system (Memtest) and the CPU. I
would let Memtest run overnight and see if it is running in the
morning. Running these tests could at least give you some more
insight into was is really going on.

The BIOS update might be to permit Win98SE, ME, or 2K. There should be
an info file at GW support that describes the purpose of the update.
I'm not sure that I would try this under the current conditions unless
booting to DOS is stable for at least 15 minutes, you know the floppy
drive works, and you have a new floppy disk for the purpose. The
install program needs to be unpacked and copied to the floppy so you
might not even get to this step.
You can access the BIOS setting to clear NVRAM one time on the next
boot. The NVRAM on this generation of Gateways can get corrupted and
this clears and restores the contents. This could fix the failed
Windows boot. Also, verify the HD is set to Auto in BIOS. Remove the
HD, and gently(?) slam it into its socket. Also, remove the RAM modules
and reinstall them. This was a GW maintenance step for boot failures.
Since the concensus is a failing mainboard, you might as well open the
case and give it a close inspection. To do this, the strip with the
power button slides to the left. I "think" it is like the 9100xl with
the small hole on the right of this strip to depress a lock with a
paperclip while forcing the strip to the left. Lift out carefully, the
ribbon cable is fragile. This exposes the keyboard screws. Lift out the
kb carefully; the ribbon cable is fragile. See if the interior is
filled with dust and vacuum that out. Check the screws on the heatsink,
etc. Does the fan spin up when the power key is depressed?

I finally got the gateway solo 9150 to install windows, drivers, etc. Still
having problems though. If I run scandisk it finds errors, click fix, will
do this to a certain point then crash again. If I don't run scandisk will
work fine. That is until I install my net work card. Will install this ok,
but when trying to connect to internet, crashes again. About to give up on
this. I did update the bios, took everything ok, but suspect still problems
in there somewhere. Have had 2 hard drives in, both do same so know thats
not it. Can shutdown, reboot, everything fine till scan disk and connecting
to internet. Any more info appreciated.
