Hey guys i have been waiting for quite a long time now to have a decent card and it seems this war ain't going to get over any sooner!! :D ..but anyhow, i need a good GPU which can handle my 20" monitor's resolution(1600x900).After going through many searches and stuffs, i found that 6790 actually beats 550!!..i just want a word of advice as to which one should i buy.

PS:budget-300$

Solution

nice processor but still i think you're going to be bottleneck GTX570. but i do know someone who ran GTX560 SLI (which is faster than a single GTX580) just fine with E8400 but i do not know how exactly he does his setup. and GTX570 need at least 550w PSU as recommended by nvidia. you might want to have a close look on the 12v rail as well since high end card from nvidia normally need 35A-40A on the 12v rail

the difference between 6790 and 550 is minimal.the 550 has physx which will help you enable physx(which I absolutely love) on the 21 physx compatible games. The drivers of nvidia are better.Believe me,I used to have a hd 4850 and the driver support was BAD to say the least.People say that with the 6000 series amd has god drivers but I can't confirm that.In the end get the 6790 as its better

The HD 5850 for $139.00 just came back in stock on newegg today. It is better performing than the 6850, just wish I had the money for one right now :(
If you have 300 budget and a good enough psu and M/b buy two and crossfire them.
It sold out really fast last time and I imagine it will do the same again

I'm on a c2d E8600,G41 type mobo,500watt PSU and the baddest thingy>ddr2...but as of now, i just want a good PSU+GPU.Also, some guys adviced me that gtx 460 would do enough for my resolution but i'm a bit skeptical about it doing good at max settings.GTX 570, yes for that physx!!

The card it's self is only going to need 10 - 15 amps but some more is going to be required by the rest of the machine, how many cards out there use 35 - 40 amps on their own? None I would wager.

lol. that makes sense :p . so i assume when the box mention the card need X ampere on the 12v rail it should mean amps needed for whole system right?

Ofcourse, that 40-50 A is for the whole system and yes i would need a better PSU with atleast 48A of amperage but does the GPU has anything to do with the processor??? one can understand about it being related to the memory modules, but the processor? just doesnt clicks.

Yes.
