Pc losing time

Hi

My friends computer is losing time, she turns it off at the wall on each shut down. I suspect it is the battery on the mother board as the computer is 4 years old. I was taught 15 years ago that the computer should not be turned off at the wall but is that true? Would turning it off at the wall help flatten the battery or is it just that it is getting older?

will the computer fail if the battery isn't replaced soon?

no the battery is only for to remember time and bios settings

As stated above, If the battery goes flat the BIOS will set back to default and the clock will start a new at its base time.
