$2000 to upgrade my rig

Hi, I just joined the forum and have a quick question for all the experts, so please be gentle. ;)

As the title said, I currently have extra 2k to upgrade my gig which has served me well the last 3 years.

My specs are :

PSU : 850W (don't remember the brand since it's not brand name :p  )
Motherboard : Asus P6T
CPU : i7 920 OC @ 3.8 1.27mV with Cooler Master V8.
Ram : OCZ 12800 6gb gold edition. I think they discontinued, but these serve me well, so I might keep these.
Case : Antec 1200 (kinda regret not going for Cooler Master :(  )
GPU : HD 5770 Diamond OC @ 960/1350 mhz. stock voltage.

Right now, I have three options in mind : all the gtx 580 i'm talking about are 3gb version, so they are more expensive than the 1.5gb one. Only NVIDA cuz I want physx :sol:

1) Go with U2711 for $800 (ebay) + 580 Sli ($1000) + new PSU (AX 1200 for $250) = $2050

Or

2) Go with Surround with 120hz ($750) and same setup ~ $2000

Or

3) Keep my current monitor (asus 24" lcd 60hz) and add two more 60hz for cheap + one gtx 580 ($550) ~ 1000 and spend 1k left for i7 2600k + usb 3.0 sata 6 motherboard + liquid cooling.

All advices are appreciated....Sorry for writing to much but I want to put all my thoughts out there.

Your system is rockin' like a boss. With that is mind, I would grab the 2nd option. Later you could grab a 2600k, but with the CPU you have now, you are going to do great.

Wait, why do you need a 3gb version? I think 1.5gb would do fine.

You will need more grunt for surround gaming at full graphics IMO,

Try: tri-SLI 580s and two more cheap 24 inch monitrs. 2 580s will often be below 60 fps with 3 monitors.

I was debating about that too cuz the 1.5gb version is $100 cheaper, but most people reports that most game needs 3gb vram to max out on surround.

What do you think ?

Surround -> 3gb vram is the way to go

Really ? So if the screens are 120hz, it will be worse?

No.. it just means that ur monitor can actually display 3d images at 60hz, or 2d images at 120hz.
What lozz08 was trying to say is that since 2x gtx 580 would often deliver less than 60fps, it wouldn't matter if ur monitor is 120hz, 240hz, a zillion hz. U wouldn't reach even the 60hz full capability

Hum...how about option 1. Is the U2711 worth the cost ?

3gb is better, but if you are gaming @ 1080p surround, 1.5gb should do just fine. SLi GTX 580s will max out ANY game with more than 60 FPS. BF3 might give it some trouble with surround 1080p monitors. You would still get 50+ FPS though. Any other game would run flawlessly on SLi GTX 580s.

That is what he is doing, just he would need a new PSU to run SLi.

Thanks for all of the advice. Seem like not a lot people fond of the idea to spend $800 on U2711 :D . I have a friend who is willing to sell his gtx 580 (to upgrade to gtx 590) 1.5gb EVGA OC version for $380. That makes $130 different compared to 3gb version on ebay.

Should I just go ahead and get that one or get the more expensive one so that I won't regret in the future ? Also, my current PSU will do fine with one GTX 580 right ?

If it isn't brand name, I wouldn't run a hard drive on it let alone a decked out system and a GTX 580. If you can grab a 1.5gb for $30 less than a new 1.5gb, don't do it. If I were you, I would just grab two new 1.5gb GTX 580s and grab some extra RAM. (giving you 12gb RAM if you buy 6gb more) Along with the monitors of course. The three monitors would be 1080p monitors, right?

If I were you I would just grab a 580 and another monitor and call it a day. Your system is already pretty nice and is only lacking in the GPU considering the rest of your specs. Buying anything else is really just overkill and not necessary but its your money.

He wants at least 3 monitors, that is his point.

Yes. No point going for dual monitor since I will play FPS quite a bit. Thanks everyone for the input. Imma get 1.5gb gtx 580 then :D .

I don't like it when other people tell me I don't need this and I don't need that and you can get by with something less because it is cheaper , at the end of the day it is YOUR computer and you should get what YOU want and not what somebody else wants you to get. I have three Evga GTX 580 Hydro Copper 2 3gb cards in 3 way SLI and that is because it is what I wanted and maybe its over the top and overkill and crazy but it is my computer and maybe I will never use all that video ram but I would rather have it and not need it then not have it and need it. So if you want a 3gb video card then that is what you should get and if you want to go over the top then check this out;

Good, I agree with the guys above me, it is your machine, I am just tryin' to help ya here. 3gb would help for future games, so if you have got the money, ya might wanna grab that. If you wants to play BF3, you MIGHT need the extra RAM. If you could find a 2gb card, (don't think they make those) I would grab those. If I were you, I would grab the 3gb if I had the money for BF3.

Do you think U3011 is a waste of money ? I mean I have more than 1k to drop on that but I can use that money for something else. Any advices ?

If I go with U3011, I will have to get 2x GTX 580 3gb, just let ya know :D

2x 3gb 580's is the best configuration out there atm, unless you start using tri-sli which can be a bit dodgy with drivers. get those graphics cards and spend the rest on the monitor/s of your choice

Yeah, because it is his money, not ours. That is a great point. Grab what you want. Just be happy.
