PCIE - Identifying the version?

How do you identify between the PCIE slots? I know x16 and x1 are obviously long and short respectively. but how about from PCIE 1.0, 2.0, 2.1 and even 3.0 ? And do they matter when buying GPUs?

If you know what chip set the motherboard is then you can look up the chipset. The only issues I have seen is no video with version 2.1 cards in older 1.x slots. (not all manufacturers came out with a BIOS update) This is regardless off everything being backwards compatible.
