This sounds like an issue that I ran into when playing several instances of wow at once or playing wow in windowed mode while fire fox was in the background during a memory leak. I later found it to be virtual memory or pagefile also known as a swap file. This file acts like ram on any modern os but is substantially slower and is subject to the limiting performance of a hard drive. What is your boot drive?

it is a small C: drive which ha very little space on it, but the game is located on another HDD .

I have played the smae thing on my newer 6Gb/s 1TB Maxtor HDD , with lots of space. no difference.

any ideas how to stop this swap file thing happening, or reducing its effects.

its strange, cos i got lots of free memory, would it naturally use this swap file thing, or is there another reason for it?

thanks so far :)

Without it modern computing will be very limited as programs and most operating systems consume more memory than what is typically available in ram. In games graphics cards keep a cache known as texture memory for storage of data, it is virtual and outside the card in ram and pagefile. If you have a spare sata port just get a cheap ssd and I can post a guide how to enable the page file there plus you will gain some space on the c drive ;)

If you do that there will be a general performance boost in most apps being more responsive.

EDIT: You can do it now if you want using one of the other drives.

For Vista and Win 7

Start

Control panel

System

Advanced system settings

Performance

Advanced and then on the bottom there is a section for virtual memory, click change.

Now choose one of the other drives that you want to use like one of the more modern drives. Click custom sze, enter a larger amount than what is for the virtual memory on the c drive. Then click ok, restart, then go back and uncheck the virtual memory for the c drive. Last option no paging file then click on and restart again then you are done.

fair do's. i get all that. but why does it only effect ONE (light, low memory using) part of the game, and only 2 games. i play hundreds, no problem

i will look into that. thanks a lot mate :)

Sorry, i forgot to add, it crashes like the last pic when
A) you open one particular save game where i have the whole of europe.
B) You open the TRADE panel in the game
C) you play for more than 1h 30mins

This problem is arising more and more. it seems to be RAM , GPU or CPU dependent, but the GPU is fine, i got plenty of RAM and my CPU quads are not over working themselves tbh

Guys, no replies aint helping me. after looking again at the FPS and the core usage, everything seems in order. nut now the game screen goes a pale grey/blue if you play it for too long, needs a system reboot. what is this?
