Hello,
A friend offered me a q6600, Asus p5b premium, 4 gigs ddr2 for £150, he also said he would well me a 8400s for £20.
Am I right in thinking that a phenom 955, £50 mobo and new ddr3 ram would offer better value?

Yeah, my build and either of those cards imo,
You know the history of B.N. parts plus you have send back to shop option if anything goes wrong,
I know 5770's rock, can't offer any advice on the 68xx series other than check reviews, google 6850 vs 5770, should get you some benchmarks to peruse :)

do you mean 6850? and you should use this:

and add 50W~ overhead or so to work out how much wattage you need.

just so you know HDDs, SSDs, optical drives and fans use hardly any power, so you dont really even have to factor those in ( use about 2W each or so, some older HDDs may use 4W maybe).

Probably not . maybe try to get ~ 3.7, with a coolermaster 212 I've seen highly recommended for those on a budget.
Looks like I'm sorted, thanks you two.

Ps. Yes I did mean 6850, iPod messing up my spelling again. =p
