A very interesting problem/ question with a new hardrive and upgrading

Hello, I am building my own system and i am using an old hardrive with windows XP on it, and i am looking to upgrade to windows 7. My problem comes with that I want to put the upgraded OS onto a brand new, more reliable hardrive that is not the one with the Windows xp installed on it. Is it possible to upgrade onto different hardrive than what held the original operating system, and if so how might I go about doing this?
Thank you for your help!

  1. Yes. The Win7 installer will look for all the drives in your system. When it does, just select the new drive. It will format the drive and install Win7 on it.
  2. just install the win 7 on the new drive you cannot upgrade from xp to win 7
