ok sorry hit the wrong key and posted before finishing:

relevant components

CPU :amd II x3 455 (fourth core unlocked) @ stock 3.3ghz
mobo: ASUS M4A79T DELUXE
GPUs: 1x xfx 1gb hd4890
1x power color 1 gb 4870
PSU: antec earthwatts 650W
oh and 8gbs ddr3 ram (10666)

Other relevant info:
Latest version of CCC
both cards IDed correctly in GPUZ states crossfire functioning @x 8 (checked this out unlikely to be a cause of any bottle neck)
Get the little ATI crossfire icon when crossfire enabled in games
Resolution 1400 x 900.

Fitted the 4890 last night and benched on a few games i.e nba2k11, GTA IV, Dawn of war II.
NBA 2k11 does not ask much of a GPU at max and ceilings at 60fps normally so not surprised no change.
GTA IV notoriously bad port but I would expect some improvement maxed everything out and ingame bench showed about 50 % resource utilisation for all components and a fps of 13!!!
Dawn of war II I expected to scale up but on on ultra settings using ingame benchmark average fps 26, min 1.06 which is about the same as running my 4870 solo.

So any ideas? I have shelled out a lot of money over the last month I have moved from a 4670 crossfire set up to a 4870-4890 cf set up and there is no real difference except to my bank balance.
