970 Extreme3 cpu fan won't latch

Putting together my first build and I've got some problems. AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE fan won't latch on to my ASRock 970 extreme3 motherboard. Called ASRock and they said to just push harder, but I'm using nearly all my strength and it won't latch on. Will I damage the CPU or motherboard by pushing too hard?
