Lost desktop icons

Hello,
I am at wits end, I have been struggling with my pc for 2 days, I think I got rid of the trojan and malware(I'm not getting redirected to bogus sites like before) BUT now ALL of my desktop icons are gone! I need to know how to get them back, I am not very computer savvy at all so you might want to keep it as simple as possible please.

In 7/Vista right click the desktop and go to view then show desktop icons. In XP if I remember right the process is pretty similar if not exactly the same.
