Will a gt 555m outperform at least a gtx 460?

I currently have a desktop with a nice gtx 460, but I need to get mobile so I'm getting a laptop with a gt 555m. How much more powerful is the gt 555m?

  1. Edit: The link was a price per performance chart. However, the 555m is a mobility card and is going to be considerably less powerful. However, you likely use a lower resolution on a laptop, so it may not get crushed as much as you'd expect.
  2. Actually, the resolution will be 1080p on my laptop, compared to 1280x1084 on my desktop :(

Yeah at 1080p, 555m is not going to cut it. Especially with a 460 at such low res, you're probably maxing out every single game. On the laptop you'd be lucky to get medium on a lot of games.

    Hahah, very well.

This might not be the right section, but will the fact that the laptop will be running on a new i7 (Sandy Bridge) processor and 8bg ram, compared to my desktop's core 2 duo and 2gb ram make a big difference in gaming performance?

In gaming, not much. The GPU will be the limiting factor by far. You'll probably notice the laptop is a lot smoother and faster in Windows, though.

I mean if you upgrade the desktop to 4 gigs RAM it'll probably show an all around improvement. Also depends on which core 2 duo you have in there. If it's a slow one (<2ghz) then it definitely is a limiting factor, but a good C2D isn't going to be much of a problem with the 460.
