Pulled a stupid - accidently plugged my coolpix 4300 into a
microprocessor I had been using to experiment with some control software.
The end result is that all of the automatic color balance options are
screwed. Pictures come out pink or blue. If I manually white balance,
everything looks fine.
Has anyone ever heard of a magic sequence to reset the coolpix line or
is this a "put it in a box and send it to nikon moment?"

Is there a reset button somewhere? Sony's, palms, ect seem to have a
little button hidden that you have to use a paper clip to press to
reset. Check manual.
Failing that, I took my sony p32 partially apart after the flash
failed and noticed that there is a button cell to save settings. I'd
be a little bit carefull with that one though.
Have you gone though every setting shown in manual to see if you just
have a value you missed messed up?

Sometimes leaving the battery out for 2 -3 days can reset things.

Some cameras have a "factory - reset" in a tiny hole under the batery hatch
or the memory card hatch. I would look for that.
Usually it neest to be reset with a straightened paperclip.

Has anyone suggested trying the "restore defaults" setting that is almost certainly
in the menu (it's on the 5400)? Depending on how that actually restores the default
settings it may or may not do the trick, but it's certainly easy enough to try.
