I use a USB mouse on my notebook pc that has a touch pad in the office. On
travelling, I use touch pad instead. I found the mouse is not working
smoothly and have heard that it is due to the mouse and the touch pad
activate at the same time. Can someone advise me how to disable the touch
pad when not in use.

I recently purchased a Microsoft USB Cordless Mouse that works great with my
Dell Inspiron. It has a small unit with a USB plug on it. The mouse has one
AA battery. There is a storage recession for the USB transceiver under the
mouse which automatically turns off the mouse. It didn't require I install
a driver, just plugged it in and it works. ~$40

Don,
Thanks for your experience shared. Do both built-in touch pad and usb mouse
co-exist on the same pc without any interference or just replace the
built-in one?

on my Dell (M60) they coexist with no interference problems.....

Ray,
They are compatible, without any difficulties. If I use the mouse, no
problem and if, while the mouse transceiver is plugged in, use the touch pad
no problem. I can't say this would be the case with all laptops but with my
Dell Inspiron 700m it is smooth sailing.

Good morning Ted, let me add to the message thread the touch pad and mouse
info;
Control Panel, Mouse)
(the Device Settings tab)
Synaptics TouchPad V6.2
the mouse isn't listed
(the Hardware tab)
Synaptics PS/2 Port Pointing Device
HID-compliant mouse (This is the Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse -
USB model 1023)
The mouse seems to have the typical switch built into the wheel but I
haven't found out how to activate it. I'd like it to be a double click.

My touchpad and wireless Logitech USB mouse work together on my Acer, too.
You should have access to the touchpad utility, in a fashion similar to
accessing preferences for your mouse. I have a small icon in my system tray
for the touchpad. A right click brings up the options for the touchpad. My
moue is accessible through Control Panel.
