ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 problems

I have tried to use a secondary LCD display on two different Acer laptops and BOTH have been screwed up. The graphics cards just crap out after a while and the primary screen goes black and refuses to function.
I think the issue may be that I had the display extended and then put the PC to sleep. I then unplugged the secondary display and tried booting again... which led to a black laptop screen, even though everything else seems to work fine.
How can I fix the laptop screen/graphics card?
