After downloading and burning a Knoppix CD, upon insertion I got a
"non-emulation boot" statement and the boot just hung there.

I reburned the CD using CDburnerXP Pro, which allows me to select
among several boot types of which I chose "floppy disk emulation."
Upon insertion the CD boots into Caldera DOS and finishes at the A
prompt. However, I don't know how to make it execute the Knoppix CD
from there. I can switch to the CD drive and read the Knoppix disk
files, but I can't find an equivalent to a "setup.exe" to launch the
CD. Any help on launching Knoppix under these conditions will be
greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Try to reburn the .iso you downloaded using either Nero or Roxio burning
software and select burn from an iso. Use a slower speed than the max speed;
try either 4x or 8x.
Also, check the mdsum of your downloaded .iso to be sure your file isn't
corrupted somehow. Google "mdsum" and you can find different mdsum checkers
for windows. You should be able to pop the CD into your drive and reboot and
go into the knoppix desktop without entering anything except hitting the
enter key.
Make sure that your laptop will boot from the optical drive first. That is
accessed in your BIOS, but you already know that!

This is probably the wrong forum for this kind of question. Did you
look for a Knoppix support newsgroup or web forum?

The ISO image is already bootable. You have to find an option in
your CD burner program that drops all the bits on the CD without
changing anything.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I need to make it clear that there was
no problem with the way I burned the iso file. The Knoppix CD boots
and loads just fine on my brother's desktop. Previous inquiries into
my inability to boot indicates that my laptop (HP Pavilion zt1150)
does not support non-emulation booting, and my Google search showed
that this is not an uncommon problem among laptop users. However, I
have not found a resolution to it yet. Thanks again.

Thanks to all who replied. I noted in another reply that the ISO image
I burned works fine on my brother's desktop. I think the problem lies
with my laptop's (HP Pavilion zt1150) inability to support
non-emulation booting; and my Google search showed that this is not an
uncommon problem among laptop users.

For example, my laptop can boot from the Norton Systemworks 2003 CD,
and from my OEM WinXP CD, but cannot boot a store-bought WinXP CD (I
get the non-emulating booting prompt again). I'm trying to figure out
why some perfectly-formed CDs can boot on my system and others cannot.

The CD that works on my brother's desktop was created with a WinXP
"non-emulation" boot image, which does not work for my system. When I
used a "floppy disk emulation" boot image the Knoppix CD booted to
Caldera DOS, but did not automatically run the Knoppix program as I
expected. Basically, I'd like to know if I can run the Knoppix
program once I get to the A:\ prompt (the Knoppix CD is on my D:\
drive).
