Best compromise card for gaming and 3D work?

So, my wife is both a gamer and working on her portfolio to get back to working as a 3D modeller. She is currently doing both with a video card that I am actually embarrassed to mention.

Since her birthday is coming up, I'm looking to find her an upgrade. Looking through this month's gaming videocard rundown (and yes, I know that's aimed at gaming primarily) I think the Radeon HD 6950 2 GB is probably my best bet. But I'm not sure if there's something I'm missing that would significantly impact the 3D performance, or make another option a better choice.

Anyone have any better ideas or advice?

It is hard to recommend anything without knowing what it is going to be matched with.
If you could list the system specs inclusive of the PSU (you can leave out the old GPU) then it helps us help you.

It would be helpful to know what 3D software is being used before making specific recommendations.
