Where might I find a CD-RW/DVD+RW CD and DVD burner for
my Dell Inspiron laptop (it came with a CD-RW/DVD-ROM
drive). Can't seem to find one online thru Dell. Are
there after-market guyz out there??

I got the NEC burner from New Egg. Works very well.

Remove the drive and look at the label; if it is a 5 inch slim or
slimline drive, then you can try an aftermarket slimline drive. The way
this works is that the drive connection and the front panel (bezel) are
removed from the old drive and replaced on the new drive and the new
drive is installed in the existing drive caddy.
The bezel is usually a problem and only if you get lucky will the eject
button and drive light on the new drive match with those on the old
bezel, so when the new drive is installed it has just has its own front
panel that will not match the original style of the laptop, the eject
button might be difficult to access, and the drive light cannot be seen
easily.
Slimline OEM drives are available at www.newegg.com. Search on "slim
dvd burner". There are a number of replacement drives available. Make
sure if you order from newegg that you have reviewed their
return/replacement policies for OEM drives.
An alternative is an external burner, USB2/Firewire, whichever your
laptop supports.

I removed the drive. It is in fact slim and 5" wide, but nowhere does
it say 5" or slim. Instead, it sez SONY Model CRX830E and is a
CD-R/RW/DVD-ROM drive.
How would I identify a SONY CD-R/RW/DVD+RW drive with similar specs??
BTW - the bezel and system plug make no mention of DELL and so
I would think they are generic??

CRX830E is a slim drive. The bezel and connector will normally not be
labeled. If you want a good DVD burner, Sony thinks that they make good
drives, but reviewers seem to think otherwise. www.newegg.com www.zipzoomfly.com and www.buy.com are starting places. If you have a
Micro Center in your area www.microcenter.com they might have slim
drives in stock. The NEC 6500 series are very good drives.
