Intel PushPin Heatsink

Hi Folks,

I have just built a new computer and am having some issues with the pushpin heatsink for the Intel Core i5 2500 CPU.

Firstly the fan on it is making this really annoying, high pitched buzzing noise during operation. My other computer (also an i5 2500 with stock intel cooling) does not make this noise!

Secondly, I cannot get the pushpins to lock in properly. When the tower is up on its side (in normal operating position) the heatsink starts to fall off the CPU. During operation the CPU temps are getting up to 100°C which is far too hot. However with the tower lying on its side the CPU under 100% load does not get above 70°C.

Can anyone give me any advice regarding what I should do? Should I whinge to Intel about the CPU heatsink? Or can anyone direct me to an after market CPU cooler which A) will fit in my MicroATX case (MAX height 140MM) and B) Does not use pushpins.

OR can anyone link/write a guide of how to change out the pushpins for bolts and a backplate.

... wow clearly you have big problems installing it:

Having 1 pin not install properly is one thing but falling off:

Get the user manually: the instruction a clear and simple.

Maybe you broke the pin because this is not normal.

1- The thing you need to do is get the heat sink out.

2- Pull on the pin and turn them so that the arrows on each pin doesn't point toward the heat sink.

3- clean the processor and heat sink with alcohol and cloth to get rid of thermal paste

4- Apply thermal paste

5- Align pins and push on at the time.

If you look at the table below,
X being the pin:

let say you start with pin 1 then you push on 4, 3 and 2

3X X4

I finally managed to properly seat the stock heatsink using the pushpins. It did take a surprising amount of force however.
After that it did cool properly BUT the loud buzzing noise (there were no cables in the way) was still occurring.

So to fix that problem I bought a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 (Pushpins too) to replace the stock heat sink. I cleaned off the old intel thermal paste with propyl alcohol and installed the new cooler according to the instructions and dextermat's advice above and the temperatures have been very good not topping 60°C
