right now, the best buy for your money is the IBM DTLA series. Look at pricewatch.com for the best deals. The IBM prices are like: 15gig-$105 30gig-$132 45gig-$166 and up. I thought my maxtor 13.6gig was big enough for a while, but I am down to 2 gig, and I only have a few games on there.

I would like to rephrase question c:

c) In order of importance, which are the important things to
look for in a drive?
- Search Time
- RPM
- Cache Size
- ATA66 OR ATA100

Hi, well I would say...

1st RPM
2nd Search Time (although cache and search time should probably be joint 2nd)
3rd Cache
4th ATA66 or ATA100

The last one is only really going to be important if you're think of running raid on your system.

Hope this helps.

If you are looking for speed look for higher RPM and data density(how many gigs/platter)
I think currently the fastest hardrive is IBM's 75GXP(7200RPM w/15 gigs/platter).
You can get a 75GXP in 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75gb.
Check www.storagereview.com for more info.

I agree with everyone here ;)

I regularly buy the 45Gb IBM 75GXP drive and it's an excellent hard disk (we've got about 10).

I can also recommend the Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 40 drives.

I know this might sound like overkill, but I had just ordered what i thought was a maxtor diamondmax 45 plus and had sent to me the maxtor diamond max 40 plus. This was an error on the part of the vendor and i have an RMA. However my question is have you had any experience with the two drives. The 45 has the same specs but 0.5 ms less seek time average. I am wondering if it is worth the effort of return, etc. Or, should i punt maxtor all together and just go with the IBM 75 GXP?

thanks
