I have just bought a new Acer Travelmate 3202XMI and I'm finding the
sound level (when using headphones) not to be very high. I can turn
the volume up to max without it getting too loud.
I'm unsure if this is an error or just how the model works.

First try another headphone. Yours might have high impedance that is
limiting the volume. Also look at the Audio tab in Sounds and Audio
Devices and select stereo headphones; that might help. Check the sound
volume settings (Volume tab, Advanced button), set to max, and make sure
that the hardware sound keyboard control (F4, or similar) is also
matching at max volume. The function key usually is the only control
necessary, but check the volume controls anyway. Is there a physical
volume control wheel that is not set to max (like some Toshiba laptops)?
