Hello, Intel Q9550 vs Intel i7 990 X - HOW much faster ?

I currently have the Intel Q9550 quad core processor, and am debating moving up to the Intel 990x or the 980X, I do a lot of video editing, would I see a lot of performance boost ?

I have scoured Google and cannot find any real tests, in regards to rendering out video footage, with different processors.

Thanks if anyone has any info

Dave.

It would make a lot of difference if the app is heavily threaded.
The newer E series I7 Which will likely cost a bit less than the 990x in all honnesty.

The new E series I7 will cost less than the 990X ? I doubt this.

As all new series of chips, there will be a large variety, from "normal user " to the Xtreme model like the 990X is now.

why do you say that the cost will likely be lower ?

for the same reason the 2600k performs better and costs less

I would suggest you wait til next month as the 990x replacement will be out, the i7-3690x (will be the same price as 990), and it is a different socket. Preliminary benchmarks show the 3960 tops out at about 30% faster than the 990x.

I'm assuming you're using mental ray? Then you could probably expect the 990 to be at best twice as fast as the q9550. Comparing it to the 2600k review, and then the 990 vs 2600k article.

Although the 990's 320% price increase isn't logical to only a 15% performance increase vs the 2600k. But then again, if you're looking at a $1000 cpu, what's $700 saving vs a little bit difference in render times.

^^^ These people are right. Wait just one more month for the Sandy Bridge-E processors with the same price but much higher performance. Also quad channel memory. You'd be crazy to get a 990x system now.

Hi Dave,
Did you upgrade to the Intel i7 990 X?
If so are you going to sell the Q9550? I'd be interested if you are.
