you really need to provide a lot more information. a dual core 2.6 can mean a variety of things. there is normally a specific name for your cpu. say Core 2 Duo or AMD X2. something that helps us help you.

if you're referring to the e6600 intel core 2 duo 2.6ghz then it is miles above the pentium 4 3.0ghz HT. The E6600 is essentially two of those CPUs in one, and both of these cpus will fit in the 775 board that you are referring to.

The E7400 would be better of the two. It has a more advanced CPU architecture which allows it process more instructions per clock cycle. There's a big difference in performance.

The E7400 is dated though so it is considered a little weak compare to more current Intel CPUs. According to Intel, it should be compatible with the mobo that you have.

How about saving a lil´bit and getting a new build??

Otherwise...dual core hands down.
And, of course, check compatibility with that MoBo.
