Replacing my 3870x2 with a VTX3D 1GB Radeon HD 6850 PCI-E 2.1 Graphics

Hi,

I need to know if a VTX3D 1GB Radeon HD 6850 PCI-E 2.1 Graphics Card is compatible with my pc which runs a 3870x2 and a q6600.

I am looking to replace the 3870x2 with the 6850

My thinking is the psu shouldn't be an issue here because the 3870x2 is a power hungry card wheres the 6850 is quite conservative on power.... correct me if i am wrong

Any advice would be great

According to the specs for the HD3870x2, a 550 Watt or greater power supply with two 2x3-pin PCIe power connectors required.


The 6850 requires a 500 Watt or greater power supply recommended 1 6-pin PCI-e connector. Everything equivalent, like the GTX 460, or faster than it uses two. Just make sure you have the 6-pin PCI-e connector and you should be set.

Thanks , what kind of gains would i get from upgrading ? is it worth paying that bit extra for a 6870 ?

I don't think, tat it's worth getting a 6870, but if it's not much more expensive get it.

A 6850 will work just fine, the 3870x2 was known to be power efferent any way. For the 68x0 series cards the maximum power consumption is 151w with the 6870 using two 6pin power connectors.
