Pc to tv with hdmi

Hello, i just bought a new i7 hp computer and have it hooked up to a small screen 2008 samsung TV monitor
-- i want to hook it also up to my large screen 2009 samsung HD tv-with HDMI but the connection does not work-----I have it connected into the HDMI that the manual says it the one for PC but nothing a blank screen
the computer is running windows 8----
what to do?
1. is there a adapter for the hdmi to be connected into the regular computer connection?
2. or does windows 8 have a problem making the connection?
