the 6950 is reference, would there be any reason going the 560 ti hawk route?

will be playing at 1920x1080, movies on 55 inch led

----and if anyone could recommend a monitor for gaming and movies, that would be fantastic. was about to purchase the u2311h from dell but noticed it didnt have an hdmi

Why do you want HDMI? The only point of HDMI over DVI is that it carries sound as well as video. The u2311h has no speakers so HDMI would be pointless. Built-in speakers on monitors are notorious for being junk anyway so there's really no downside.

The U2311H has a DisplayPort 1.2 port which is actually better than HDMI (more bandwidth). This is used for Eye Infinity (ability to run up to 6 monitors on a single Graphics card and use them as one large screen for movie watching or playing video games).

Display Port > HDMI.

The MSI GTX 560 Hawk is factory overclocked at 950 mhz, which makes it significantly faster than a vanilla 6950 in a majority of games. In addition, this latest Hawk series comes loaded with enthusiast features, the latest upgraded "Military Grade II" components and advanced power management circuitry. It also features the newest version of the Twin Frozr III cooler, which is one of the best coolers on the market.

This one is easy, the Hawk is a better card, and at 1080 resolution you don't need 2gb of memory.

Since he is looking to use it for playing movies, I'd think video quality would be important and as you can see by this review, AMD cards have better quality: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/hqv-2-radeon-geforce,2844-10.html

And you can also get overclocked 6950's and if you are adventurous, you can unlock the shaders on any model to have the same number as 6970's (not 100%, but about 98% chance). There is even a Twin Frozr III model.
