When disassembling an external hard drive where is the disk

I am going to technology school (just started), so I have been practicing taking apart different components from computers I get from the thrift store. While taking apart a Western Digital external hard drive, I did not ever find a disk. why is that?
thanks, from the novice. :)

More about when disassembling external hard drive disk
  1. Everything but an SSD has a disk in it, with one or more platters. I doubt you got an SSD from a thrift store but it isn't out of the question.
  2. Could you post the model number?
Or possibly you've just bought the caddy?
    Moto
  3. odd, photos? i suspect someone has conned the thrift store.
  4. +1 Smells like an external caddy.
  5. Aren't externals basically Low RPM internals inside an enclosure?
I think you must go... deeper.
