Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 @2.5GHz
8GB DDR2-800
2x Seagate barracuda 750gb/500GB HDD's @7200RPM
Corsair GS600 80+Silver Certified

Im looking to upgrade from the old GT 220.

Im looking at AMD Cards.

So, XFX AMD Radeon HD 5770 or XFX AMD Radeon HD 6870

I don't want ANY bottlenecking so i want to make a good choice, and there's also a signifigant price difference.

Im playing DiRT 3 when it comes out, also CoD, and maybe Crysis but probably Crysis 2

The 5770 can play Crysis 2 Maxed Out at 1080p with 30-45 FPS i've seen, and i'll probably flash bios.

So, What should i choose to get the most performance with my rig?

Thanks

There's a price difference between the 6870 and 5770 but the 6870 will perform better of course. You won't eliminate bottlenecking at 1080p with either card on Dirt 3 or Crysis 2, but both would be improvements over the 220. What is your budget exactly?

@jbakerlent

$190 is my budget, im really into DiRT/Assassins Creed aswell.

Also buying a PSU.. so i wan't the best value.

Got any good quality/priced PSU's aswell?

Thanks

That psu listed above is great and I would def recommend it in a situation where you need that type of power/amperage, but for a single gpu you do not need that much of a psu imo, especially to power your system and a 5770. If you cant oc your cpu then the 5770 will suffice but your performance will likely be held back a small amount... this psus below will be just fine (not to mention the fact that they will run just about any single card on the market today) and save you some money over the corsair listed above, don't get me wrong its a nice psu but you do not need all that.

something along the lines of these two psus will suffice, they both have a good amount of amps on a 12v rail and are cheaper then the corsair:

Honestly there won't be much bottlenecking, at least not enough that the framerate will be below an acceptable level.

Still, learning to overclock that CPU would be beneficial.

As for GPU, I like the 5850 recommendation a lot. It performs in between the 6850 and 6870, and it's way better than a 5770. Two 5770 perform between a 5850 and 5870 - the 5870 is close to a 6950, so basically the 5770 is slightly better than half as good as a 6870 or 5850. Kinda sorta... lol.

Oh right, and it also depends on your resolution. What is it?

hey Wolf, just out of curiosity what mobo are you running 5850 crossfire on and what has your experience been with the so called issues associated with crossfire such as low minimum fps and microstutter, just curious

I have an Asus P7P55D Pro running them at 8x/8x. Really like this board.

I've had very few issues that a driver reinstallation didn't fix. Never had microstutter. I can only think of Cryostasis and Metro 2033 ever having points that my min FPS became noticeable, although I recently replayed Metro (like, 2 weeks ago) and it was performing significantly better than it used to so I think they optimized the drivers for it now. It ran very smoothly at Very High, DX11, 4xMSAA, Tess on, DoF off, PhysX on.
