I'm planning to put up an FTP server for myself after I swap out the family's computers (I get a new PC, dad gets my old one, mom gets dad's old one, and I get the last one back). Understandably, it is a very old machine.
It's an 1.7GHz Athlon 2000+ machine, with a gig of ram. I can't remember the motherboard right now (I'm at work and can't check), but assume it's old and horrible.
My question is: Do I need to get an all new (but cheap, as I understand a private FTP server does not need a lot of power, at least compared to a gaming PC) computer for the FTP, or will it be enough if I put in some more RAM in the old one?
If I need a new one, could someone recommend the cheapest viable setup? I'm on a shoestring budget.
I'm planning to have it run on Xubuntu or some other Linux distro.
The server would be used by me and sometimes a few friends, in total less than ten people.
