i need to ask whether my M3A78-EM asus board will support AMD FX-4170. it is am2/am2+ board.Currently i am using phenom 9650 .Someone told that fx4170 must need am3+ thats why i asked .Kindly help
The board has to be AM3+ to support AMD FX CPUs. Among the many reasons is that AM3+ CPUs are 942-pin where as AM3 is 941 and AM2/2+ is 940. You could use an AM3 processor on an AM3+ board but you could not put an AM3+ CPU on an AM2/2+ or AM3 board. It would also be impossible to use an AM2 CPU on an AM3/3+ board as the AM2 CPU lacks a DDR3 controller.
AM3 processors can be used on AM2 boards because they still have a DDR2 memory controller on chip in addition to a DDR3 memory controller. AM3+ processors are entirely different and will not work on anything except an AM3+ motherboard; among the changes with AM3+ (FX) processors is that they do not have a DDR2 memory controller. They will not work on an AM2 board.
There have, however, been AM3 boards that are capable of running AM3+ processors but only an AM3 board can do this and even then the support is hit and miss if successful at all.
thnx , i got it , now i have to change my mood of upgrading processor , as now i have to upgrade minimum motherboard and ram too for processor
You could look into buying an AM3 processor for your motherboard as they do work on AM2 motherboards. It wouldn't be an FX processor but you can still get a really nice AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor for $110. (From newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... ) IMO, still a great processor.
