Not using VisualBoyAdvance, but I believe that there is an other emulator
that does enable this.

Yes, it's been possible for a while now since version 1.7 which can
emulate the GBA link cable. However the latest version 1.7.3 can
emulate - wait for it - the wireless adapter!!

However - to trade between Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and FireRed/Leaf
Green, you must have beaten the Elite Four in BOTH games and in FR/LG,
you must have also done the Island Quest to fix Celio's network
machine.
