I bought a BFG GS-550W psu about 3 years go (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817702010). It has been working like a champ so far, except it gives a very annoying whine when I have it on. My current system setup is as follows:

AMD Phenom II x4 B50 @ 3.6Ghz
ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO
G.SKILL Ripjaws 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 @ 7-8-7-24
Nvidia 9800 GT
A couple of HDD running at 7800 rpm or whatever..

My question is, would this psu be enough to power a 6950 or 6870? Down the road I will want to Xfire whatever card I get, at which point I am 100% sure I will need to upgrade my PSU, but will it hold out if I get either one of these cards?

it sounds like your fan might be dirty or you could have a cap that's going bad in the unit itself. either way no a 550w will not work for crossfiring a pair of 6870's (1 of these uses 247w under load so you might be able to run 1 of them but not with THAT psu).

So your best bet is to get a 750 or higher watt, 80+ certified psu

strait out answer is NO.
You can not run you system if you want those cards....you will need a good brand 850watt I would even step one higher than that especially if your planning on x firing you plug one of those cards in and run a 3dmark 06 test I would be surprised if your psu didnt blow you definitely need to grab another power supply no other answer
