Slowdown with new PSU?

I decided to give my old PC some new life as I gave it a nice new graphics card (http://www.hisdigital.com/us/product2-535.shtml) to replace my old PCI-based EVGA NVIDIA 8400GS. I had a 436 Watt PSU, and when I swapped graphics cards after installing everything correctly, my computer started locking up in random places, even though games would run liquid smooth. Since the required power supply is 400 Watts, I figured it would be a lack of power issue, so I ordered a new 600 Watt PSU (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028)

My computer ran more stable, but it also ran very slow (yet Windows Index gave it the same score as before I even got that graphics card), so I thought (without much thinking) that perhaps the graphics card is doing too much a drain on the PSU, as silly as it sounds.

So, I decided to order an Add2PSU (http://www.add2psu.com/), and now I have both my old and new power supplies powering my computer. My old PSU is powering my hard drive and two disk drives, and my new power supply is powering the motherboard, CPU, and new graphics card. However, my computer occasionally locks up (not as bad, though) and is still quite slow (It can't multi-task the way it could, load screens take forever, etc.).

So, my question is what should I do now? I don't have the money for a new rig, and I'll post the stats of my computer for you here (or what I can get thanks to my Vaio's restricted BIOS).

Your CPU is slightly old. I belive (but i cannot be sure on this), that the cpu bottlenecks your graphics card so much, that the physx support from the nvidia actually made thigs run faster, taking off that from the CPU.

Unfortunatelly its a very long time since the Pentium 4, so i cannot really guess it in an easy way.

Also, you might want to take a look if there has been some issue with software/drivers. For a 1 core CPU, its very hard to keep up. In other words, i dont think its the PSU falut (unless you connected some cable wrongly? perhaps the 4 pin cable for the CPU is not connected?). Thats about all i can figure out.

no, i believe you are correct in thinking cats_paw, the cpu is bottlenecking the gpu very much! I would recommend an i3 2100 if you are on a budget, or if you can afford, an i5 2500k with an 1155 socket mobo. The 1155 is the newest socket type, and will house any new/newer cpu out today. Even the Ivy Bridge release will be compatible with H67, P67, and Z68 boards. the i5 upgrade would run you appr. $350, while the i3 upgrade probably under $200. CPU is definately causing issues though with speed.

Even if the CPU is bottle necking the new graphics card, it still shouldn't be any SLOWER than the old card. Since you switched from an Nvidia card to AMD, did you make sure to completely remove ALL the nVidia drivers before you installed the new card and AMD drivers? If the slowdown occurs only in games that support Phys-X, then cats_paw could be right about the phys-x support being an issue, because AMD cards do not support Phys-X. In any case, the PSU only supplies power to the system. If it has the capacity that the system requires, the PSU can't affect how fast or slow the system performs. If a system requires 500 watts, it won't run any faster with a 1000 watt PSU than it would with a 500 watt unit.

Actually, I would be hesitant to make that last statement Clarkjd.

The load on the PSU is different between a 500w and a 1000w with the same hardware. Most PSUs tend to lose a lot of wattage if they are running close to max output and they tend to have the best results at 50% load.

It could be that the old hardware was sucking less juice such that it caused the PSUs load to be at 50% instead of say 90%. Running it at 90% could have been shorting power to all sorts of things and causing all sorts of strange problems and I wouldn't say slowness would be an exception.

It could also be that the now larger video card is taking more resources from the CPU than the CPU can handle now, combine that with the above and you might have all sorts of craziness.

If I have learned one thing since I have started lurking here (quite a while ago) and posting (much more recently) it is not to underrate the importance of the PSU in pretty much any condition. It has more effects on the inner workings than is readily apparent and certainly not an "If there is enough W, you are good" thing.

A PSU will only supply the amount of current that the system draws from it. If the system only needs 350 watts of power, that's ALL that it will draw whether from a 500 watt supply or a 1000 watt supply. Now, you are right if the PSU is being run at 100% of capacity, then the system requiring MORE than the max available will cause problems, usually in the form of BSODs, or constant re-boots. PSUs will not cause throttling or slowdowns like heat related problems will(if a CPU gets too hot, it will try to reduce temps by slowing down the CPU). Anyway, not having enough power usually causes the system to stop, not slow down.

At any rate Power shouldn't be an issue as the OP has a 600watt main PSU and an auxiliary PSU, which should be enough for any single graphics card system.

Actually, something about that video card. While it runs off of AGP, it actually has a 4-pin peripheral power port on it that is required to run it. If it isn't plugged in, the computer will refuse to start, telling me in a blinking message that there is no cord in the plug.

I'm not certain it was an overheating issue, for a few months ago, I swapped out the 9-year-old gel with Arctic Silver 5, and I'm getting readings of it being only around 50 degrees celcius in the computer. Of course, my processor itself has no temperature, so there's no way of knowing.

If there's specific info you want me to tell you, let me know.
