Before I had cable I was using dsl and I was getting about 1-1.5Mbps, usually, but it was sufficient for xbox live. You wont ever be able to host any games, and your connection might not be the best, but I think that you would be able to play games online.

You should be more interested in your upload speed than your download speed. Online games aren't downloading much - they're uploading data.

256k upload should be enough to be able to play without much of an issue. You'll have more latency but nothing that should stop you from playing most games.

Well 1mbps is about 125kb download speed. It might be enough but it depends on the game, graphics settings, and you need to make sure you aren't doing anything else on the network while gaming. Its cutting it really close.

l 1mb per second is considered fast in south africa, my friend plays bfbc2 on overseas servers on a 384 kbps line, not that his ping is very good hehe
