IF YOU GUYS WANT TO SEE AN UPDATED VERSION OF MY BUILD, MJMJ'S 1000$ GAMING GREAT, SCROLL DOWN. IT IS STILL BASED AROUND 2 560 TI'S. ONLY MINOR CHANGES WERE MADE OVERALL BECAUSE OF DISCONTINUED PRICING
the z68x-ud3 also had a combo deal with that same ram, which would have allowed you to use a spinpoint and evga 560 ti's. you also could have used the microcenter i5-2500k+z68x-ud3h combo, which was $290 a couple days ago ($300 now).
either way, i think you demonstrated pretty clearly that if you jump on the right deals, you can have an i5-2500k + dual 560 ti system for under $1000, and that cant really be beat.
no offense, but i think the single gtx 570 has no business up here seeing as there were several perfectly capable gtx 580 builds.
i totally agree there was some very nice gtx 580 builds
only a 6950 2gb? how did that get in here? i didnt know this was the best gaming build after you spend another 250$ on a second gpu......
| p07h34d wrote : Funny seeing both the budget and high end using the i5 2500k :3

not really unless you want to go real budget...
does anyone know what you get if you win?? everyone has been asking and i m curious too.
haha thanks. i wish jpishgar would say!!
oh noes! I'm losing! ;(
Oh well .
I forgot about this... should've changed the graphics card. IMO my build would've been great if it hadn't been the graphics card. .
| p07h34d wrote : This lol, and still not a single ssd build.
|
you have a point with the ssd. i was pissed when i couldnt get an ssd in there
| mjmjpfaff wrote : you have a point with the ssd. i was pissed when i couldnt get an ssd in there |
Same. I wanted to try to get at least a little something too.
Wonder why my "real" budget build didn't make it into this build?? Not that it matters to me, but >$900 seems to me not so "budget" to me. I had a ~$550 build for a "Budget" build.
| mjmjpfaff wrote : does anyone know what you get if you win?? everyone has been asking and i m curious too. |
Fame. Sort of
Your build will be in the next System Build thing and you will be given credit.
It would be very interesting to me to see a very similar to my own personal pc on the next system build if I won.
This would help me a lot improve on my next upgrade by catching problems I miss
I agree, lunyone. $1000 for a PC to play games is not "budget."
Anyone have a gaming build that is abouts 1500? or a bit less?
As expected, all i5 2500Ks... :-))
i though all i had to compete with was leo's build since it had the 2nd best gpu setup (performance wise).... but i guess not.
| mjmjpfaff wrote : i though all i had to compete with was leo's build since it had the 2nd best gpu setup (performance wise).... but i guess not. |
Which makes me sad... T.T
We had this bestconfig from before and I never know what do you get if you
get the most votes.
So what do you get?
the case+cpu combo in the last build is no longer available. I wonder what will happen when that build wins & prospective buyers click that link which goes on to NOTHING.
| Anonymous wrote : Fame. Sort of |
so if techo's build wins we will see a almost identical build to the last one except you cant unlock the gpu he put in....
For the sake of system build, TBH I don't want techno's build to win. Same build as last time. I really wish to see a 570 or 2x560tis. This would be interesting. Come on....
| ksampanna wrote : the case+cpu combo in the last build is no longer available. I wonder what will happen when that build wins & prospective buyers click that link which goes on to NOTHING. |
Maybe Newegg will honor the combo price, IDK. In my build I just put in any decent combo's that were available at the time. There are plenty of other combo's out there too that are present now, but weren't present when I did my build. Most of the time you can get a decent combo and the next week/day you get a different one that you didn't have on the other part of the build, so it seems to work out one way or another in general. I'm not making any excuses for Mjmj's build or anyone else's build, but I'm just stating what I think is common with these builds.
All of these builds suck so I just chose the 6950 build.
I just configed a build yesterday on newegg for under $1000 and it had a 96gb ssd on it.
I would not build a gaming pc today without an SSD in it.
its a shame you didnt post your build than cknobman, the whole world loses when you fail to share your infinite wisdom.

ill make some changes to my build right here if you want....i thought the voting would never happen so i gave up updating my build
i think we all did. the combos generally go away at the end of each month, so starting the votes on august 1st was a great way to have a fail bestconfigs.

so his build is really a solid 800$ build?
well prices change. it WAS a $1000 build. im just bored. and its obviously questionable whether its fair to count rebates and microcenter deals.

ya i could afford 8gb's of ram if i went with a i5 2500k from microcenter...maybe they should set some rules to this

imo, ideally, best configs should have no combos. We should just list out the parts separately within the budget. Then whichever build wins, one can check out if there are any combos available amongst its components.
thats where tomshardware needs to come in they should set some rules like no mail in rebates, buying from microcenter (because you need to pick it up), i think combos are fine just dont add any mail in rebates. also dont start the voting right at the start of the month. whos great idea was that?
has there been talks like this years before? or is it just because this ones voting started on the 1st of a month?
hmmm wouldn't the 912s need more fans? they just have 2, though they're great cases btw.
here is a build using the gtx 460 2win which is more powerful than the gtx 580

My vote goes with the no-combo CPU cooler included build
But it never registered
Sorry Leo I guess noscript turned it into a "blank vote".

This is very similar to the build i had entered in this (friendly) competition...editors didn't pick it lol. Though that may be because it kind of exceeded the budget by i think $100 without MIRs if i remember correctly...or maybe bacause these seemed better...can't tell.
^though i notice all my builds with caviar blacks got rejected, and my spinpoint entry got selected. Any thoughts? Are caviar blacks bad or something?
well they are not bad just slower and more expensive (the 1tb hdd).....a lot of people say they are much more reliable but i dont buy it. the samsungs are just as reliable.

you used the gtx 460 2win?
^agreed on the expense, even the 500GB ones are more expensive. But i thought they're supposed to be "performance" drives with very low access times?
I used these charts for reference:
http://www.tomshardware.com/charts [...] ,1007.html

| ojas wrote : ^agreed on the expense, even the 500GB ones are more expensive. But i thought they're supposed to be "performance" drives with very low access times?

well the spinpoint loses in access times but wins in many other categories. dont ask me what they are i am not an expert on hdd's
It's just the forum culture. Used to be very pro-WD and lately has swung away to Samsung and Seagate. WD does usually come up as the leader in reliability, especially in enterprise drives. I prefer WD myself as a long time user.
I always get the expected HD Tune scores on them and haven't had a problem with one since about '94. The problem I had in '94 was resolved instantly by WD, as they rushed me a new drive and I just mailed back the old one once I got the new one. All free of shipping charges.... but that was '94, they probably don't do that these days.
I have used Samsung drives in builds and also found them to be good.
they are fairly comparable drives, and the samsung frequently goes on sale for $50. that makes it a huge winner for build junkies because $30 here and there goes a long way.

It won't handle high end games that's for sure. And for $800 you would be better off just...
