I have just built a new PC for the first time, but I am having trouble starting it with the GPU in. It runs perfectly with the on-board graphics but when I plug in the GPU the computer gives one beep, then reboots. It does this until I unplug it from the power. I think the problem is because my power supply is not powerful enough and so I am going to replace it.
Here are the specs:
AMD phenom II x6 1055t 95w
Powercolor 6850 1gb gddr5
Antec 450W PSU - 120mm Fan VP450 4x SATA 1x PCI-E

What power supply would anybody advise to run this system smoothly (preferably cheap) and if you wanted to be really helpful could you please have a look at what is available on this site. :D
Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you want to objectively, accurately and scientifically determine what PSU power is required for your Vid card and PC in both watts and 12v rail amps., the forum Utility link below will show you how easy it is to calculate this information and objectively determine which PSUs are quality built, reliable PSUs that can meet your needs. Be advised that the available 12v rail amps. is just as important as the total PSU wattage. You need both to be correct.

Seems like you need at least 500 watt. Should go for 650watt to be on safe side and ensure it has connections for a 75watt 6 pin power socket for the graphics card.
This is a Link to your manual, look at system requirements and installation instructions.

Your psu should (at least) start up your system if its working OK. Various benchmarks show a complete system with the gpu under full stress drawing less than 300W from the wall (<270 from the PSU).

Did you attach the power cable to the 6850?

how old is the PSU?
