Cannot view my Esternal HDD

Hello,
My laptop is a Dell Latitude 650 I have a external toshiba 500 gb hard drive that does not get recognized or it takes a long time to show on My Computer but no files show up.

What else have you connected the device to in order to know the ext drive is functioning properly and has files on it? If you disconnected it without using the disconnect hardware then there is a good possibility that it got wiped/corrupted. You might have to reformat it to use it properly.
