PCI/PCIe Interopability

I'm getting ready to build my first gaming computer and have a question about PCI/PCIe. I will be getting the Asus Rampage IV Extreme which as 5 PCIe 3.0 slots and one PCIe x1 slot. I've also got my eye on the Asus Xonar Essence ST soundcard which is a PCI soundcard. My question is will standard PCI work in a PCIe 3.0 slot?

Thanks... one more stupid question... There is also a PCIe x1 version of the sound card (Xonar Essence STX). The motherboard has a single PCIe x1 slot so this isn't an issue, but I also wanted to add a USB/Firewire card which is also PCIe x1... Can a PCIe x1 card be installed in a vacant PCIe x16 or x8 slot?
