Noise levels and reliable tests

I'm in the process of building my first "solo" gaming rig in a very long time and was recommended this board as the goto place for hardware-related questions - so I hope you guys can help me.
More specifically, I'm after information regarding the noise levels of higher end graphic cards. My current pc is running with a radeon 4870 x2 card. The noise level of it has always bugged me, and now that it's time to replace the system, I'm looking for something more quiet.

Just to be clear: I'm looking for a higher-end card here, not a Crysis 2 killer, but something that won't die as soon as I load Witcher 2 ect. Price is not an issue whatsoever. However, I am not comfortable building a water-cooled system, since it's been a rather long time since I've fiddled with this stuff myself. I'm not looking for a "silent" or no-fan solution, just something that will stop my significant other from throwing stuff at me while I play ;)

I have no way of measuring the actual noise it makes running in my system, so I tried to go from reviews this page did of the card:,review-31236-8.html - where the card is logged at 59,5 dB(A) while working.

However, at another test (of the 5970 model), the same card is logged at 52,7 dB(A) - quite the difference when talking about a logarithmic scale IMO.,2474-15.html

In that same test the 5970 card logs 55 dB(A), as opposed to 46,3 in this one:,review-32073-21.html

Long story short it seems the noise levels measured on this page varies quite a bit from setup to setup - I assume it has something to do with the specific test circumstances.

With that in mind I'm looking for help with the following:

1) A reliable list of graphic card noise outputs. I guess my current one is too old to be on any up-to-date list, but some sort of reference would be awesome (maybe with youtube clips or similar).

2) Personal experience from other users regarding the noise levels of highend cards.

Kind regards

More about noise levels reliable tests
  1. Hi there welcome to the forums,
This is the review site i mostly use when checking out cards, they are very clear about how they test as well which is good.

    Mactronix :)
  2. Lol "Crysis 2 killer" Crysis 2 is ridiculously easy to run, especially when compared to Witcher 2 which is NOT easy to run by any means.

    And here you go.

  3. Thanks a lot, that's exactly what I was looking for.
